Derek Klazinga Negligence Claim
We are currently investigating treatment provided by Derek Klazinga Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Welsh Trusts up to 2017. We act for a number of ladies who have had gynaecological treatment resulting in substandard treatment.
Many of the negligent surgeries took place between 2014 -2017.
Many ladies were seen by Mr Klazinga for
- Prolapse (a cystocele, uterine prolapse and or rectocele),
- Urinary incontinence,
- Detrusor overactivity.
They were subsequently recommended and underwent abdominal Sacrohysteropexy, anterior repair, posterior repair, TVT mesh insertion, TOT mesh insertion, hysterectomy and ventrosuspension.
A ventrosuspension is to treat a retroverted uterus in which the uterus is tilted backwards instead of forwards. Up to 20% of women experience the condition. Most patients experience no symptoms or problems during normal life or pregnancy yet these surgeries were carried out without their knowledge.
In some cases surgeries were added which were not consented to. Ladies were not informed that they required such surgery or that such surgery would take place. There were breaches of informed consent, failures to warn about risks and complications of surgery. Substandard surgery took place in a number of cases.
Often patients were advised to undergo a number of operative treatments together including a vaginal hysterectomy, repair of prolapse and insertion of TVTO tape to treat urinary stress incontinence.
In some cases patients who had a hysterectomy later went on to developed urinary incontinence and prolapse. Those ladies who had TVT or TVTO tapes experienced pelvic pain, pain on intercourse, chronic groin pain and mobility issues due to nerve damage.
Treatment took place at NHS Trusts throughout Wales including Ysbyty Gwynedd and Glan Clywd.
