13 Failing Merseyside Nursing Homes

There are 13 failing Merseyside nursing homes currently in special measures. That is simply a huge and unacceptable number. For the residents and families it must be a worrying time.

13 Failing Merseyside Nursing Homes

The Care Quality Commission carried out surprise inspections of the homes. The CQC looks at whether the nursing home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.  The 13 Failing Merseyside Nursing Homes failed to meet the criteria set out by the CQC and as a result were put into special measures.

What does Special Measures mean?

For the 13 Failing Merseyside Nursing Homes the special measures process is designed to ensure there is a timely and coordinated response to improve the standard of care. The purpose of special measures is to focus on the elements which are failing and ensure that services found to be providing inadequate care do not continue to do so. It is designed to:

  • Ensure that providers found to be providing inadequate care significantly improve.
  • Provide a framework within which we use our enforcement powers in response to inadequate care and work with, or signpost to, other organisations in the system to ensure improvements are made.
  • Provide a clear timeframe within which providers must improve the quality of care they provide or we will seek to take further action, for example to cancel their registration.

The failing establishments were revealed in a new interactive map from the CQC that was published in the Liverpool Echo that allows the public to see how care homes in their area are rated.

Dr Victoria Handley, Director of Handley Law said “When considering a nursing or care home, either for themselves or a loved one, it is so important to feel safe and looked after. This report will help families know about the quality of care being provided within these homes. It also raises awareness of the published data on the CQC website for all concerned to review any care home across the country”.
