Dangers of TVT – Abbrevo

Dangers of TVT – Abbrevo

Dangers of TVT – Abbrevo were not adequately explained to patients. It was a new procedure (before the ban on mesh) and it had not been on the UK market for long.

The TVT Abbrevo procedure was sold as a minimally invasive surgical treatment for female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). It was utilizing a shortened, 12-cm, mid-urethral mesh tape to act as a supportive hammock. It was designed to reduce mesh exposure and postoperative pain compared to traditional TVT-O, while providing long-term continence

There was no long-term data with TVT Abbrevo. Many women were not told about how this procedure varied from a conventional TVT or TVT-O. It causes chronic pain from either direct obturator nerve damage or damage to the smaller branch nerves around the obturator nerve. The damage occurs when the mesh is inserted into the obturator membrane where the obturator nerve traverses very close to the insertion of the tape.

There were significant failings in counselling and decision making for surgery for women offered TVT-Abbrevo.  The breach of duties that arose clearly led to significant harm in the form of nerve injury and scarring within the pelvis.
