Genital Beautification
Female genital rejuvenation surgery is steadily increasing. Women are spending many thousands of pounds on genital beautification consisting of labia minora reduction, labia majora augmentation by autologous fat transplantation, labial brightening by laser, mons pubis reduction by liposuction, and vaginal tightening. In the search for the perfect female form there is little comfort or corrective choices available when genital beautification has gone wrong.
What happens when you are not satisfied with the aesthetic result of your genital beautification procedure? What do you do if you experience wound dehiscence (a surgical complication in which a wound ruptures along a surgical incision)?
What are the risks?
Genital beautification can result in:
- bleeding
- ongoing pain
- pain on intercourse and pulling sensation
- ripping of scar tissue
- infection
- scarring of tissue
- reduced sensitivity of the genitals
- blood clot
- Change in colour
- an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic
Your surgeon should explain how likely these risks and complications are, and how they would be treated if they occur. Often patients are not told the full extent of the complications or risks.
Occasionally, patients find the desired effect wasn’t achieved and feel they need another operation.
Importantly, the long-term satisfaction and complication rates from vaginoplasty and labiaplasty have not been tracked. The surgeries have not been evaluated in peer-reviewed medical journals the way other surgeries have been and are therefore unproven.
The best advice for women considering vaginal surgery is to talk openly with your doctor about your feelings and concerns about your genitals, as well as your expectations for surgery and any possible non-surgical options. Targeted Kegel-like exercises can tone weak, loose vaginal muscles, for instance, and enhance sexual arousal; and counselling can address issues of sexual self-esteem and confidence.
