Gynaecologist Daniel Hay Investigation

Gynaecologist Daniel Hay Investigation

The Gynaecologist Daniel Hay Investigation by Police has reviewed 42 patient cases in their investigation.  The Interim report has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service.

A two-year investigation had been conducted by the NHS and Royal Derby Hospital into the cases of 383 women. However, the interim report found firstly a “major concern” that 50 women were likely to have been harmed and secondly, “some concern” that 69 further women had been harmed.

Women are rightly concerned as the allegations made against Daniel Hay are extremely serious. The CPS Complex case unit is investigating with the assistance of an independent gynaecological expert. So far Mr Hay has not been charged with any crime.

Treatments Under Investigation

The investigation is focusing on women who had major surgeries such as hysterectomies or sterilisation. The allegations being that Mr Hay failed to advise on alternative options to surgery. Women were subjected to a ‘surgery-first’ approach and such surgeries were often unnecessary. There is an urgent need for disclosure of the report by NHS England and University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust into treatment between 2015 and 2018 to be published.

The allegations are that Mr Hay often failed to explain the consequences of operations. Women were subjected to unnecessary surgery.

Mr Hay stopped clinical activity at UHDB in June 2018 and relinquished his medical licence in July 2021, having retired citing mental health concerns in July 2020.

In conclusion, many women are still finding out that their cases are under consideration or that their treatment was unnecessary. Women with concerns are urged to come forward so that they can be assisted further.
