Important Consideration When Investigating Infertility

Important Consideration When Investigating Infertility

An Important Consideration When Investigating Infertility and before investing in IVF.

Obesity and diabetes drastically impact gynaecological care across a woman’s lifespan, driving up rates of infertility, menstrual irregularities, and gynaecological cancers. Obesity is more than just being overweight.

Excess adipose (fat) tissue converts other hormones into excess circulating oestrogens. This creates anovulatory cycles, abnormal uterine bleeding, and reduced pregnancy rates.

Obesity’s influence on female infertility is a topic of significant concern in reproductive medicine.

The altered levels of adipokines in obesity, particularly the decrease in adiponectin and increase in leptin, are implicated in the pathogenesis of infertility.

Research underscored the impact of obesity on female fertility and fertility treatments, emphasising that the treatment of obesity should be the initial aim in obese infertile women before embarking on fertility treatments.

IVF average failure rates range from 50% to 80% per single cycle. A single private cycle typically costs between £3,500 and £7,000, with medications, consultations, and extra procedures often adding to the total bill

The significant cost of IVF and high failure rate should significantly inform the need for investigation into weight loss beforehand.
