Incomplete miscarriage procedure causes Asherman’s syndrome

Incomplete miscarriage procedure causes Asherman’s syndrome for so many women. We acted for a woman who was left with severe pain and fertility problems after D&C procedure caused Asherman’s syndrome. She recovered damages in excess of £150,000.

Asherman’s syndrome is a result of surgery. Scar tissue forms inside the uterus which causes extreme pelvic pain, little or no periods and infertility.

She experienced a missed miscarriage shortly before her routine 12 week antenatal scan.

Whilst trying to process the news through grief she agreed to a surgical procedure to remove the pregnancy. She was told by a nurse that surgery was quicker in her case than waiting for a miscarriage to occur naturally or taking medication to induce it.

After the surgery she had extreme abdominal pain and cramping. A scan revealed that products of conception were still in her uterus.

She then needed a second surgery, she wasn’t told about alternative options and was reassured that the procedure would be quick and was very low risk. Having two surgeries so closely together increases the risk of damage.

She continued to have pain and cramping and further investigation found her uterus was “obliterated” and there were extensive, dense adhesions consistent with severe Asherman’s syndrome.

She then paid for private treatment to try and ‘cut away’ the adhesions in order to then pay for several rounds of private IVF treatment.

We act for many women whose lives have been severely affected by Asherman’s syndrome. Compensation can never replace what happened but it can help to pay for private treatment and IVF as well as trauma counselling.
