Painful Procedures
Painful Procedures must be dealt with in women’s healthcare. All women experience discomfort but many report having experienced severe pain during a vaginal access procedure.
Yet despite this many do not feel appropriately supported by healthcare staff to report such pain. Routine procedures assume the procedure will be pain free. There is shock and embarrassment when pain is felt.
For those warned about possible pain, the description they received did not reflect its intensity.
Why is this still happening? There is a disconnect between how patients are prepared, and how distress is both recognised and responded to. These aspects of care can have a huge impact on how safe someone feels and being able to indicate when a procedure is too painful or may have gone wrong.
Healthcare must move on.
