Pelvic Floor Muscle Training
Pelvic Floor Muscle Training a(PFMT) first line treatment for women with stress or mixed urinary incontinence. It must be of at least 3 months duration and be supervised.
NICE urinary incontinence guidelines from 2006 and 2019 both state that it must be supervised and of 3 months duration. There is currently Level 1 evidence (NICE recommendation grade A) that PFMT should be the first line treatment in incontinence in females.
NHS-supervised pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) involves tailored, expert-led sessions with a physiotherapist to treat incontinence and prolapse. Programs focus on building strength, endurance, and proper technique through regular, supervised exercises. NICE guidelines recommend at least 3 months of supervised training for maximum benefit
In the general population, women with SUI who perform PFMT are 8 times more likely to be cured than control groups with no or sham treatments.
PFMT reduced incontinence episodes among women with stress urinary incontinence and among women with any type of incontinence.
As for any exercise intervention, it is expected that the benefits gained from PFMT need maintenance training for continuing effects.
