Standing Up For Yourself In Healthcare
Patients often take on a passive role when it comes to their own healthcare. This is based on the faith they have in the medical team. However, sometimes patients need to make sure they are being heard. In a busy clinic it is important to consider that Doctors can make mistakes, misread instructions or results, fail to engage with the subtle clues or listen appropriately to what is being said. Standing up for yourself in healthcare involves ensuring that appropriate actions are being taken to make sure the best care is given.
When medical staff are busy and things get forgotten or go missing it is important to get them to acknowledge your health needs. Ensuring that they keep focused and take the time to listen and help is important.
Things to consider
- Prepare – write a list of symptoms, medications and a list of questions so that everything important is included.
- Ask questions, even if you think they sound silly. It is important you understand the conditions you have and the treatments recommended and why. This should include risks and complications. Do write down these aspects as taking notes will help you recall the conversation later.
- Make phone calls. If you’re wondering where a medical letter has got to, or you’ve been waiting a while for an appointment, give the relevant team a call. Sometimes things do get missed, and by calling and checking, you can ensure that your needs are being met.
- Be proactive. Ask your medical team if there is anything you can do in between appointments to help manage your condition, or any advice they have for accessing other support services or helpful resources relevant to your diagnosis.
