Sterilisation at C-Section

Sterilisation at C-Section

Sterilisation at C-Section

We are seeing a rise in women pre c-sections being offered sterilisation at the same time.

A patient’s decision to be sterilised must always be made alone, free from coercion. Sterilisation at C-Section should not be something on offer.

The patient’s lack of informed consent is the only absolute contraindication to sterilisation. Patients who express uncertainty regarding sterilisation or their desire for future fertility should receive thorough counselling on alternative contraceptive options, and the procedure should be postponed until the patient expresses a clear, unambiguous desire for sterilisation.

Sterilisation at C-Section can lead to regret at the decision made. The reasons for sterilisation can have important implications for women’s sterilisation regret and associated depressive symptoms.

The NHS should not coerce a pregnant, worried, vulnerable woman into sterilisation especially when that woman has not sought out such sterilisation.

These women feel significant pressure from hospital physicians and many of the procedures were undesired, made under fear and a time of significant vulnerability.
