THE HEARTBREAK OF INFERTILITY
The heartbreak of infertility is a deeply consuming experience, marked by disenfranchised grief, particularly due to Asherman’s Syndrome.
It is more than just a medical diagnosis. It is an invisible, cumulative loss of your imagined family timeline, biological dreams, bodily control, and often your very sense of identity.
Infertility can be an incredibly isolating and lonely experience. Awareness is getting better thanks to more people sharing their experiences. Sadly many people still don’t know how to talk to, or support, those going through infertility.
Grief will inevitably be a part of your infertility journey. Grieving each loss is an integral part of the process toward parenthood. People experience infertility cycles with both hope and loss. This brings high- highs and low- lows. The unique part of the infertility process is that the losses are compounding. Month after month, cycle after cycle, treatment after treatment, the losses compound and the grief can expand.
During all this process it is made even worse when the cause of the infertility has been a medical procedure such as a D&C. Asherman’s syndrome (adhesions in the uterus) not only prevent pregnancy but if pregnancy occurs it can end in miscarriage. Endless cycles of pregnancy and miscarriage can occur before investigations lead to the diagnosis. Each moment of grief follows by the swift delivery of your medical choices but a rushed and often unsympathetic medical team.
So many women are pushed into surgical management not realising the damage it may cause to the uterus. That damage which may well prevent future pregnancy.
If you are ever faced with a miscarriage, or retained products of conception do take time to research your options. You do not have to make a rushed decision which may affect your future fertility. You can allow your body time to naturally process the loss.
