Transparency In Medicine
Transparency In Medicine is key to patient safety. There is a need for trustworthy information when patients are sick, scared, and vulnerable. Patients need simple but detailed and useful information about tests, procedures, surgery and alternatives. It is important to have access to clear methodology, honest context, and a balanced approach to simplifying complex data.
It is time for the GMC to reinforce transparency within a practical, ethical promise that supports patient choice and continuous improvement in healthcare provision.
When we are sick, scared, and vulnerable, we are asking the question of what is wrong, what are my treatment choices and what are the risks. It is hard to find trustworthy information about care. On too many occasions patients are told that they are not reliable and their narrative of ailments cannot be related to anything. Victims of medical negligence often cite repeatedly being told that there was nothing wrong, it was all in their head. If the medical profession do not know the answer then they should continue to investigate.
Patients do not lack the intelligence about health care or the advocacy. What they lack is honest information. When presented with all options many patients would likely chosen differently. There is a need for a patient-designed conversation that brings together nationally available data of options, benefits, risks and complications, curated, and credible. It needs to be presented it in a way that’s intuitive, transparent, and immediately usable.
