Trust The Doctor

Trust The Doctor

Trust The Doctor but nearly half of physicians believe that patients have less trust in their treatment recommendations today than they did several years ago. This is a reflection of growing public distrust in Doctors.

Trust is an essential part of a healthy doctor-patient relationship. Doctors need to trust that patients will provide relevant and accurate information about their health Patients need to trust doctors’ clinical judgement about the tests and treatments they need.

Patients need to feel listened to. There is a rise in gaslighting in medicine when patients concerns are dismissed. When trust isn’t present between a doctor and patient, how is care affected?

The backlog and constant pressure on medical professionals feels to them as a hamster wheel. There is no joy in the job any more. Almost a third of doctors have considered leaving the medical profession due to relentless pressure at work, with serious consequences for patient safety and waiting lists. Across the UK, nearly one-quarter (23%) of doctors took a leave of absence due to stress last year. System-wide, mental health—including anxiety, stress, and burnout—is the leading cause of sickness across the healthcare workforce. There were more than 600,000 lost working days per month.

We have a disenfranchised medical profession and fed up and poorly patients. It is a recipe for bad decisions, mistrust and error.

Midwives are at the forefront of a large number of NHS scandals at present. A midwife was reported to have advised colleagues to get pregnant women, who had arrived worried they were going into labour, to go home with the advice: “Don’t be too kind, she’ll keep coming back.”. The Nottingham trust is currently at the centre of the largest maternity inquiry in the history of the NHS – looking at care provided to about 2,500 families between 2012 and 2025. What becomes apparent from conversations with former staff is the extent to which a toxic, bullying culture operated for years within maternity services in Nottingham.

Is there any wonder that patients are losing trust and there seems to be no resolve or accountability.
