What is Vaginal Mesh

What is Vaginal Mesh

Vaginal mesh is a piece of synthetic mesh, a plastic product that looks like a net, is inserted to hold the pelvic organs in place.

It has been used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence but can cause significant harm to some women.

Side effects include erosion into the vagina, chronic pelvic pain, groin pain, difficulty urinating, pain during sex, and worsening of incontinence.

The NHS announced it would pause using vaginal mesh in 2018 following patient safety concerns.

Many women have had further operations to sew over mesh erosion and then to partly or fully remove the mesh.

In many cases the pain improves, but it does not go away. One the mesh is removed women need more surgery for the worsening incontinence.

Many women were told that it was only happening to them. Many women try and hide the devastating effects due to embarrassment caused by incontinence.

Some women use wheelchairs due to the debilitating effect of the pain.

We have acted for 100’s of women affected. Dr Handley commented “No one needs to sit at home in pain and without help. Many women do not know about the mesh hospitals which were set up to help with mesh injuries. We always encourage women to contact us to share their story and do not suffer in silence”.
