What Matters to Women

What Matters to Women

What matters to women who are undergoing gynaecological surgery? We have seen that pelvic organ prolapse (POP), stress urinary incontinence (SUI), and surgical mesh complications can substantially affect women’s quality of life.

Although surgery is often effective, outcomes are variable and complications may occur. A recent study reviewed evidence on women’s experiences of surgery and care as part of the NIHR-funded APPRAISE project. The aim was to inform the development and content validity of new surgery-specific patient-reported outcome and experience measures.

The study found that women judge the success of surgery for POP, SUI and mesh complications by its impact on their everyday lives, including physical functioning, emotional wellbeing, relationships and social roles.

Should this really come as a surprise? What other possible outcomes could there be? Interestingly the medical profession pushed mesh for stress incontinence without thought of the consequences. Their aim was to make a woman ‘dry’ at the expense of her sex life and causing pain. The concept that she may want to use a conservative treatment which had lesser efficacy but without risk was, and remains, a concept that many Doctors fail to grasp.
